How to Organize a Low Waste Home

how to organize a low waste home

Organizing a low waste home may look different than organizing a normal home. A low waste home is more likely filled with reusable cloths, fresh produce, and bulk items. We can organize our home in a low waste and sustainable way.

The items listed below will be your best friend when organizing your low waste home.

1. Jars

Jars for zero waste storage

Jars are one of the best storage items for a low waste home. You can organize lots of items in jars and they are nice to look at also. Glass jars are also less toxic than anything plastic and can be endlessly recycled (be sure your community recycles glass)

Jars can also be upcycled from anything you buy in a jar from the store. Pasta sauce, coconut oil, pickles, etc. all normally come in glass jars that can then be reused to organize and store items in your home. This way you are saving money on buying a storage container and at the same time making use of what already comes in the jar.

Thrift stores are also a great place to find glass jars for organization and storage, this is where you can easily find very large glass jars and storage containers that you wouldn’t normally find in the grocery store pasta sauce aisle.

Jars can be used to store anything you can fit in them, bulk items, loose produce, any reusable cloths, etc.

Sanitizing Glass jars is easy, simply bring a large pot to a boil and put your glass jars in for about 20-30 minutes to sanitize the jars and take out any residual smells that remain from whatever was stored in there before.

You can also use this quick and easy method in the video below.

2. Delivery Boxes

Save those delivery boxes. Delivery boxes can be used to store different items like wires, any seasonal items, or whatever you can find other things you might need to store.

3. Thrift

Thrift stores are great resources for anything you want to buy. Buying secondhand items extends the life of that item, saves money, and helps create a more low waste home.

Search the thrift stores near you for any storage bins, large glass jars, baskets, and other kinds of storage items.

4. Freezer

The freezer is a great place to store food that might otherwise go bad and contribute to the food waste problem we have.

Store fruits that you can later put in smoothies, store kitchen scraps of veggies to make broth, store leftover pasta sauce, soups, and more.

Glass jars work great in the freezer, just be sure to only fill them to about half capacity to avoid any shattering.

Use these zero waste storage items to organize your zero waste home.

This is a great post! It’s so quick and to the point. I love using storage bins for organizing. It’s so easy to move things around without worrying about losing something.
